Local Area Description
On the outskirts of Rojales, Formentera is a quiet town with shops, banks, supermarkets, restaurants and bars, all within a few minutes walk away. There is a whole street of Disco's near by that are very lively on Friday, Saturday and Sunday ( Nb. in Spain Disco's are like our nightclubs. Spanish nightclubs are of a more Adult nature.) This is a quiet town during the day, a perfect place to sit with a San Miguel & Tapas and watch the world go by.
ROJALES covers a large area including large urbanisations but Rojales town is a typical Spanish town. Where there is a variety of shops, restaurants, tapa's bars, cafes, banks and pubs. There is a health centre with a new one in the process of construction and a multitude of small shops and three large supermarkets. In the town centre there is a very pretty church, a local museum and a lovely village square where you can sit and watch the world go by. There are cave houses to explore with art displays and a house with millions of shells on the inside and outside, the owners lifetime work. The river Segura runs through the centre of Rojales, this is a lovely place to while away a few hours in the evening and where many of the locals spend their spare time with the family. Rojales comes alive on Thursday mornings with the market held beside the river in the town centre. People come from everywhere to get their fresh vegetables and the many bargains that are obtainable there. There is a road of very lively disco's in Rojales at one end, this is where the locals let their hair down on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings until the early hours ( it is easier to order your drinks if you can speak a little Spanish).
BENIOFAR is a very nice town about 10 minutes walk from the apartment that has all the everyday amenities with quite a few new pubs and restaurants springing up on the urbanisation of Benimar, here you can have Indian, Chinese, Spanish or just a fast take away food all within a few yards of one another. There are many bars visited here by the local ex pats and a good old English evening can be enjoyed with all the benefits of the Spanish climate. In 1957 most of the town was destroyed and many of the inhabitants perished when the river Segura burst its banks. Do not worry; this will not happen now because the river has reinforced banks that have sluice gates to control the flow.
CIUDAD QUESADA is an urbanisation that has its own large shopping centre, pubs, banks, health centre, shops restaurants etc, it is only about a 15 minute walk from Rojales town centre. If your interest is golf then the 18 hole municipal golf course La Marquesa is a good course to play. There is a reasonably priced aqua park between here and Rojales open from June till September, the opening hours are from 10.30am to 7pm.
GUADAMAR is about 10 minutes drive from Rojales and is a lively, but not too tourist orientated town with lots of shops and where there are miles of fantastic beach with a blue flag for safety & cleanliness, with nets to play volleyball, and climbing frame nets to keep the children busy while you top up the tan. Lifeguards attend on the beach everyday. There is a large leisure centre with swimming pools, football courts, tennis courts and other leisure activities available just at the bottom end of the beach. There is also a marina in Guadamar where you can indulge yourself in all kinds of water sports. If you fancy some fresh air to your body there is also a large nudist beach (but they do let small nudists on too). Guadamar is one of the preferred places that the Spanish, living inland, visit for their summer holidays.
TORREVIEJA is a very large tourist resort about 15 minutes drive from the apartment, at one time this was a tiny fishing port, a little hard to believe now. Everything you would want from a resort town is here, shops, banks, bars, disco's, live entertainment in the summer and lots of beach side cafes to laze away a sunny day. There are water sports, many beaches with little coves to explore and even a submarine in the port that you can go aboard and look around. It also has its own aqua park at Finca La Hoya Grande. If you want the odd flutter there is also a casino here on the front opposite the marina. ( No casual dress allowed in there). On the outskirts of Torrevieja there is a large area of natural beauty, here you can find many species of birds including large flocks of Flamingos, there are organised tours for the twitchers amongst you. Market day is Friday morning.
SANTA POLA is about 20 minutes from Formentera del Segura and well worth a visit if you want a town that is more of a holiday resort; it has beautiful beaches where all kinds of water sports are available. There is an area of beach where wind surfing is the main sport. There is an amusement park with dodgems etc open all year round. There is a very nice church and in the town centre there is a fortress that is now an impressive museum. The restaurants all serve delicious fish brought into the port fresh every day. Market day is Monday and Saturday.
NOVELDA This village is about 35 minutes away heading up country and slightly inland, but the drive is worth it for the beautiful modernist design sanctuary or Church of Mary Magdalene's with its beautiful exterior and huge paintings of Mary Magdalene and Christ inside. In July they have a fiesta in honour of Mary Magdalene and her image is carried all the way down the winding sanctuary road to the village of Novelda with thousands of people attending. There is also two castle ruins called Mola castle on the same spot that you can enter and look around. The warden of the church will supply you with a beautiful booklet and map of Novelda written in English. The church has a convent in the grounds where the nuns serve drinks and sell souvenirs. The village of Novelda is a very typical Spanish village with beautiful architecture, museums and large parks, it is worth a day to visit and explore the area.
BENIDORM is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes drive away and is the typical resort built for British holidaymakers, beach, pubs and bars with entertainment in every one, this is what Benidorm is. If this is your ideal then you will enjoy a trip here. There is a theme park Terrametica this side of Benidorm, Spain's equivalent to Alton Towers, you need to spend the whole day there to get your moneys worth. Benidorm also has its own water park Aqualandia that is open from May to September.. Yearly ClimateSUMMER in the Costa Blanca is typically very hot with little or no rainfall with temperatures mostly between 25 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius during the day. Temperatures during the summer rarely drop below 15 degrees Celsius. In August the weather can be almost unbearably hot with some days reaching 40 degrees Celsius or more. Fortunately on most days we are blessed with cooling sea breezes. Because humidity is so low, you won't feel the temperature is as high as it really is. Do take precautions and always wear a high factor sun cream especially if your are on the beaches. THE WINTERS are very mild compared to northern Europe with most winter days being clear and sunny. The temperature can vary greatly in winter however, one day it can be over 20 degrees Celsius and you will be walking around in your T-shirt, on another day it can be 7 degrees Celsius and feel very cold. The World Health Organisation describes the climate on the Costa Blanca as one of being the best in the World. Costa Blanca's summers are hot but not too hot due to the cooling sea breezes and the winters are mild with many clear blue sunny days. THE CLIMATE and weather is very healthy especially for sufferers of arthritus. The areas around Torrevieja which is surrounded by natural salt lakes are especially good.Alicante Airport (ALC) serves the Costa Blanca. It is located centrally to the entire Costa Blanca and is a full service airport. There are taxis available at the airport although most only carry four people. If your party is larger, a variety of airport transfers can be arranged ahead of time.San Javier Airport (Murcia) Another option for travellers is San Javier Airport in Murcia (MJV), south of Costa Blanca. While its main service is to Costa Calida, it’s within easy reach of many places in southern Costa Blanca.
The apartment is situated on the edge of a typical little Spanish town called Formentera del Segura, just 15 minutes outside the resort of Torrevieja in the Costa Blanca. 30 minutes drive from either Murcia or Alicante airports. You are 10 minutes drive from Guadamar beach ( regarded the best on the Costa Blanca ). 5 Golf courses are within 20 minutes, including La Finca, home of the Spanish Open. Car hire from as little as £60 per week or local buses run daily. The Costa Blanca boasts many courses, most within 40 minutes drive. Below is a selection of the courses within 5 to 20 minutes drive from Formentera del Segura Villamartin
Villamartin is not one of the more internationally recognised courses on the Costa Blanca but is very well worth playing and because it is still relatively quiet, getting the tee time you want should be possible. While not a terribly long course, Paul Putman's imagination has made the best use of the available terrain. The back tees make this course a challenging test but if you are looking for a relaxed game, fromthe forward tees a number of short par 4's are fun to play and the water only reallycomes into play on three holes. The greens are large and rolling and are very receptive, even to slightly mis-hit shots. This is a versatile and generally well-prepared course, easy to play and easily accessable.La Marquesa
La Marquesa is located in rural Ciudad Quesada, an area that nature seems to have created a ready made layout for a golf course. Set in the low lying land, the gently rolling slopes that lend themselves to the design of a very fine golf course. The greatest challenge this course sets comes from the complicated undulations of each of the 18 greens. The fairways are wide and flat making this an easy course to walk, the distances between greens and tees are short. The majority of the holes are "friendly" however there are a few twists in the plot to keep the golfer on their toes if they want to score well. Streams and lakes border the course, which gives excellent views and provides beautiful, natural surroundings to play golf in.L

La Finca golf course is situated at the foot of Mount Escotera, in the municipality of Algorfa, right in the heart of the Segura region. Designed to host top tournaments, La Finca golf course has the greatest variety of greens of any course on the Costa Blanca ranging in size from very large to very small. In addition, the course has a reserve hole so that, in the event that one of the holes has to be closed off unexpectedly, players are still able to complete a full 18 hole round. There are several lakes, streams and reed beds throughout the course that add to the beauty as well as the difficulty of the holes. The course is home to a wide variety of migratory water birds, such as ducks and egrets, while the interior of the course is home to olive and palm trees, thus creating a beautiful backdrop of vegetation with a distincly mediterranean flavour. Las Ramblas is located 40 minutes south of Alicante, 30 minutes from the beautiful city of Murcia and only 5 minutes drive from the fabulous beaches of Orihuela Costa. The golf course is set in mountainous terrain between two ravines on the shore of the mediterranean. Its location and layout makes the course very interesting for players who like to take a few risks and requires accuracy throughout as both fairways and greens are narrow and demanding. Although it is mountainous, the course is populated with enough trees to enhance the scenery, provide shade and add obstacles to recording good scores. It is not dry either, Las Ramblas means riverbeds, which may be dry but the lakes on the course cetainly aren't and they do come into play. A number of the slopes on the course are very tricky; the most spectacular is the 4th a par 5 named "la Plataforma". The hole requires absolute precision to judge the affect of the deep slope and also to avoid the two water hazards protecting the green. The course is not too long but we do recommend hiring a buggy to help traverse the undulations and give you more time to take in the wonderful views. Campoamor Golf Club Campoamor Golf is located 10km from Torrevieja, the Royal Campoamor Golf Club opened in 1989 and was designed by Carmelo Gracias Caselles. It is 6,203 metre long with a par of 72 The Campoamor is covered in lush grass, and is surrounded by beautiful pine woods and orange trees and overlooking the coast Torrevieja to La Manga del mar Menor. The present facilities of the Golf club will shortly be replaced by an ambiyious project including the construction of a new club house in the highest point of the estate. It will have cafeteria, bar and restaurant, large and luxurious social lounges, terraces, changing rooms, shops, club room, storage room, offices, parking, swimming pools, childrens playground with babysitting, sports centre and facilities for tennis, paddle and horse riding
